36 Years and Still Going
Capricorn Gowns started in 1979 in Eastgate, Aberystwyth by Mrs Nelson who still owns and runs the business. The shop has moved premises a few times but has always been based in Aberystwyth town centre, now residing on Terrace Road.
Before going into fashion Mrs Nelson owned one of the town’s guest houses and one day visited a friend who owned a clothes shop, she was talking about wanting to sell up and retire. Mrs Nelson decided there and then to take over the shop. When Mr Nelson arrived home that day from work he found out that the family were moving to the flat about the newly acquired shop!
Between 1985 and 1997 the shop had a coffee shop on the first floor which furnished the town with tea, coffee, lunch and afternoon teas. It was very popular mainly with the men folk waiting for their other halves to finish choosing their outfits on the ground floor. Some customers treated it like home from home as well as spending many hours watching the world go by they would often put their shopping in the freezers and pick them up on their way home.
This is a photo of the old shop in Terrace Road, we moved from here in 1997
Dressing up for Aberystwyth Yesteryear Festival
Throughout the 80s Aberystwyth had an annual Yesteryear Festival which Capricorn Gowns looked forward to with special window displays and staff dressing up. Here is an old cutting from the local paper, The Cambrian News, Mrs Nelson is shown sitting having tea on the left.
The shop, in it's present location, a stone's throw away from the promenade, has continued to provide fashions to the women of West Wales and visitors from around the UK. Now a bit more up-to-date than the above photo which was taken sometime in the late 1980s.
